General FAQ
Do you design web pages for your customers?
We are not in the design business, however we can refer you to some web designers that can
help you. We primarily focus on maintaining the servers and networks to keep
your web site online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Could I have access to Cold Fusion on your server?
Sorry, Cold Fusion doesn't run on our servers.
Do you offer Dedicated Servers?
Not at this time.
I found this great background process that searches radio telescope signal logs for signs
of extraterrestrial life; can I install it on my site?
We don't allow background jobs on our servers. You can check our policies page. If you
need to discuss this policy, please e-mail us. This is to maintain the highest level of
performance on our servers for all our customers.
Can I use use Macromedia software (i.e. Dreamweaver, Fireworks) on your servers?
Yes, our servers support those MIME types.
Are the MIME types for Shockwave Flash files registered on your server?
Yes they are there, as well as the other Macromedia types.
Can I run a chat server from my site?
We do not support chat servers; we suggest you try registering on a dedicated chat server;
there are free rooms available. Sorry, but we can't have background jobs
running on our servers.
How long do you keep your access logs?
Typically 2 months or longer. They tend to use up a lot of disk space so we
purge. If you need them you are welcome to copy them to your own system; they are
available for you to download. Summary reports are kept indefinitely.
How often do you reboot your servers?
Not very often. Average once per month or so. We may need to reboot if there
is a hardware problem. If you are on the notify mailing list we will send you e-mail
before scheduled outages. Down time is typically less than 30 minutes per month.
In regards to bandwidth, how many hits can you support at once?
Our servers support a max of 300 simultaneous connections; I've seen hit rates of 40
hits/second sustained, or about 2 million hits a day.
How are you connected to the internet backbone?
Our servers are interconnected on a 100 Megabit Ethernet to switched network. We use
high-reliability 3Com, Cisco, DEC, and HP equipment. The current topology is OC3 to MCI,
Sprint, UUNET, Pacbell NAP, Mae-West, Mae-East, and CIX (PAIX), and many others.
Everything is fully redundant. Connectivity is second to none.
Are you Mac Power PC compatible?
We run on Unix servers; some Mac users have uploaded their web site using Fetch.
Do you have File Maker Pro Installed on your servers?
No, we do not use File Maker.
Is it possible to change a domain name from a .net to a .org?
You can add a domain to an existing account for a one time $20 setup fee, and no additional monthly fee.
If I send you a program, could one of your people install it for me?
Unfortunately we are too busy with system administration tasks to get involved in user's
installations, however we can send your request to a consultant that can help you.
If I need to go beyond 100 Mb, what is the incremental charge?
It is $2 per 10 Mb / month
Does US Interspace provide Server Side Includes?
SSI is standard, so just name your files with an '.shtml' extension.
Are their any rules as to what content users may put on your site?
Material is subject to US laws; copyright material can only be posted with
permission from the copyright owners.
What payment method should we use? Do you send invoices?
Please send check or money order. We invoice by e-mail; we will send invoices by
regular mail upon request.
How much would a web site for the youth group at our church cost?
We give a 50% discount for non-profit sites ($9.97/month)
I need to change my billing address information. How do I do it?
Just e-mail to billing@us-interspace.com your new street address, e-mail address and
domain name. Note that we normally bill by e-mail, so make sure we have your correct
e-mail address.
Is there any minimum? What are the terms?
There is no minimum contract period, and we have a 30 day satisfaction guaranty.
